Ocean Sciences 036:

The 2024 AGU (American Geophysical Union) Annual Meeting will be held from December 9 to 13 in Washington, D.C. The "Union Session 013 - Ocean Negative Carbon Emission Approaches for Mitigating Climate Change: Mechanisms, Practices, and Governance" organized by Professor Chuanlun Zhang from Southern University of Science and Technology, Professor Nianzhi Jiao from Xiamen University, Professor Kanchan Maiti from Louisiana State University, and Professor Adina Paytan from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the "Ocean Sciences 036- The Impact of Climate Change and Human Activities on Carbon Sequestration in Coastal Wetlands and Strategies for Carbon Sink Enhancement" organized by Professor Siyuan Ye from Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology, China Geological Survey, Professor Ken Krauss from Wetland and Aquatic Research Center, U.S. Geological Survey, Professor Nuno Caiola from Climate Change, Technology Center of Catalonia - Eurecat, and Professor Nianzhi Jiao from Xiamen University, are now open for abstract submissions. Both oral presentations and poster displays are available. We warmly invite you to contribute to this session.

PS. We also have a Town Hall session sponsored by the UN Ocean Decade Progam “Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (ONCE), theming “Eco-engineering approaches for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR): Strategies and challenges”, which will provide a platform for dialogues between panel members and the audience. We also have a booth in the exhibition hall to introduce the ONCE program. We welcome everyone to come and communicate with us on site.

Background

Union Session 013:

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade for short) represents a significant ocean science movement, aiming to addressing the most critical issues of global oceans. In this session, we invite all research communities to consider, evaluate and advise on negative carbon emission approaches centering around the following initiatives:

1) establishing an international network of instrumented marine field stations and research facilities;

2) co-designing and executing interdisciplinary collaborative research projects;

3) developing an assessment framework for evaluating mitigation and adaptation strategies;

4) coordinating capacity-building initiatives and fostering equitable policy and societal awareness.

Specifically, we invite contributions focusing on:

1) exploring ocean negative carbon emission through land-ocean integration;

2) maximizing carbon sequestration in the ocean by integrating various approaches such as alkalinity enhancement; and

3) protecting ecosystem biodiversity. Furthermore, we advocate for equitable ocean governance of adaptation and mitigation strategies.

This involves fostering closer engagement with local, regional, and global industries, decision-makers, and legislators.

Ocean Sciences 036:

Coastal wetlands represent some of the Earth's richest carbon sinks, storing vast amounts of carbon within their soils and vegetation. However, climate change and human activities have altered the processes of physics, chemistry and biology that created many uncertainties in the carbon sequestration potential of these ecosystems. To address these complex issues, this session brings together a diverse group of scientists to explore a wide range of topics, including biological, ecological, geochemical, geological, and theoretical factors that influence carbon sequestration in these regions. Through collaborative discussions, participants will identify the most pressing challenges and propose strategies to enhance the carbon sink capacity of coastal wetlands. This session offers a unique opportunity to share insights into the impact of climate change and human activities on Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (ONCE), will develop comprehensive assessments and actionable recommendations to guide policymakers and governmental agencies like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
